6th July, 2025:

A tremendous thank you to all who came out today to help. What a great turnout we had. So much was accomplished that will really get us moving forward on the right foot.
It was a hot, humid day yet the team persisted in picking rocks, moving target stands, framing the rebar with wood, pounding in stakes, and hanging signs.
A special thanks to our member who brought his skid steer to help out.

Next steps:
  • The surveyors will be working on the 14th/15th to mark off the perimeter on the 1000m and 600m.
    • Once that is done, we will engage a contractor to clear the foliage along the line.
    • Once cleared we will call for volunteers to go hang signs and run a line along the boundary cut.
  • One more range day like today will be organize to get us ready for inspection.

Thank you again to everybody for your help and support.
1st July 2025 update:

Progress continues, but there is still a lot to be done before we can cross the finish line.
We received our new range rules signs, and are continuing to work with a surveyor to mark our perimeter lines to cut them to put signs up alongside the 1000m and 600m edges.

In the interim, we can do the following:
  • The range rules signs on each range can be replaced, and the perimeter signs along the parking lot area, besides range 1, and behind ranges 1-6 can be erected on poles.
    • This would require a fence post driver (one will be provided, but if you have another one multiple teams could operate simultaneously) and a cordless driver. Be aware the areas behind the range are wet bog lands and can be treacherous to walk in – dress appropriately.
  • The target stands and props on the range floors need to be repositioned and wood affixed to the rebar of target stands close to the firing point (to reduce the chance of ricochet).
    • We have 1x2s to be zip tied in place, but cordless sawzalls or jigsaws, or manual saws will be required to cut the wood to size.
  • Rocks must be removed from the backstops.
    • This would potentially require long or telescoping poles, ladders, and climbing the faces. Any other ideas for tackling the taller (6m) backstops are welcome.

Anybody who is able to help with these tasks is appreciated on Sunday, 6th July from 9am onwards.

20th June 2025 update:

Progress is going well, with the CFO’s inspector performing a pre-inspection earlier this week with our contractor onsite to validate all work undertaken. We received a positive review and passed preliminary checks.
A big thank you to Scott for all his hard work and personally taking the time to meet with the inspector.

The first batch of range perimeter signs has arrived. A second batch is underway, as well as the new range rules signs.
We will be engaging a surveying company to mark the perimeter as necessary for the new signs, then we will require volunteers to help clear the brush and growth and put the signs up on the trees and on posts.

Lastly, we will need volunteers to help setup the ranges since a lot of targets and props were removed for the contractor’s access, and to strap the closer target stands with wooden surrounds to help reduce the change of ricochets in event of the rebar being shot. We will put out further notices soon once we have determined the range layout appropriate to the new range rules to comply with the new requirements.

For transparency, we are nearing $70,000 spent to achieve this. The final tally will be released once we have reopened.

13th June 2025 update:

  • The contractor is coming close to wrapping up the work on a significant remodel of the backstops that will make future maintenance much easier, while reducing slumping and helping maintain conformity to required backstop angles.
  • We received a response from the CFO regarding our application for approval, inquiries into the continued use of our rebar target stands, and feedback to our proposed new signage and operating rules.
    • The board convenes on Monday to put the fine polish on the details and then we will order the new signs and make a plan for the target stands.
  • Stay tuned for a request for volunteers for a range pre-inspection work day, in which we will put up stands + targets, props, address some minor details, pick rocks, and put up the new signs on the ranges and around the perimeter.
    • Once that work is complete we will arrange the inspection with the CFO and hopefully be operational within the coming weeks.

May 2025:

In July 2024 the Springfield Sports Club submitted to the Provincial Chief Firearm’s Office an application for renewal of operations, as is required every five years. In November the NB CFO performed in inspection of the facility.

The CFO informed the board in March 2025 of failures of compliance. The board contested some points, while committing to remediate others.

Unfortunately, due to wet ground conditions, and a lack of response from the CFO to our correspondence regarding the contested items, we were unable to remediate in time and were issued with a notice to cease operations immediately in May, 2025.

Additionally, in the period between the notice of inspection failure and the notice to cease operations, the province introduced a new set of range requirements (the previous edition that we had been evaluated against being from 2003).

The notice to cease operations concluded with a closure of our file, requiring us to submit a new application for approval and to start the process again; this time the evaluation will be performed against the newly introduced requirements.

The board has evaluated the new requirements and is working to resume operations as quickly as we are able, but timelines are unknown. We will continue to update the membership on a monthly basis of any updates, should it extend beyond a month’s duration.

We would like to remind everyone that the board are volunteers and negative sentiment towards individuals is not appreciated.

2025 is the year to hopefully rebuild our club shoot program. A number of club shoots have been planned to hopefully spur the club into structured competitions. Club competitions is a time for members to mix and informally compete between each other and this is the time for new shooters to learn from experienced members.

The following shoots have been placed on the club calendar:
  • Bulls-eye matches for both centre fire and rim fire utilizing handguns and rifles There is a maximum number of participants for these matches.
  • Cowboy / Wild bunch for both centre fire and rim fire. Each match will require either 2 revolvers or 1 semi-automatic plus a pump or double barrel shotgun and a rifle in pistol calibre. Centre fire and rim fire matches will be on sperate days.
  • Practical Pistol matches for both centre fire and rim fire. All handguns must be carried on the strong side and concealed under clothing. Don’t have experience with a holster let Tim know and we can arrange instruction.

All club shoots require confirmation of participation no less than 14 days in advance. If you commit, please show.

The top of all rubber mats must be hung no more that ¾ metre from the range floor.
Mats on Ranges 5 & 6 were adjusted a week ago and today at the range it was observed that they were rehung 1.5 meters from the range floor.
DO NOT hang mats at 100 from the top of the rebar stands on ranges 5 & 6.
Once all stands are replaced there will not be an option to hang the top of a mat more than ¾ metre from the range floor.
